Several millers have expressed renewed interest in this old favourite and it continues to be a mainstay of the Warburton contract. Openfield is now co-ordinating seed production on behalf of the breeders to the stabilise seed supply.

Solstice

The market leading Group 1, Solstice is very popular with both growers and millers. Best suited to conventional sowing (mid September onwards), Solstice has very stiff straw and responds well to fungicide use.

Podium

The only midge resistant milling wheat, group 2,early to mature, excellent physical grain quality, short stiff straw coupled with good fusarium resistance, Openfield can offer a very attractive buy back contract, contact your Openfield Farm Business Manager for details.

Cordiale

High yield, short and stiff , excellent grain quality with large end consumer interest + flexible drilling options. With the correct husbandry, it can be used in almost every situation: early or late drilled, first or second wheat. Cordiale`s early maturity makes it an ideal entry for OSR.

Group 3 soft milling

Tuxedo

Newly recommended Group 3 variety that ticks all the boxes �€� biscuit, distilling and export. Yields similar to Invicta. Excellent disease resistance, especially to Yellow rust and Septoria tritici . High HFN which reflects its good sprouting resistance. Good second wheat yields. Performs well whether September drilled or late drilled after roots. CTU tolerant.

Target

Genuine group 3, very high yield especially in the East, provisional full export classification, midge resistant, good disease and lodging resistance.

Claire

Claire is a good biscuit wheat that continues to be the benchmark for Group 3. It is popular with millers for its good dough extensibility characteristics.

Invicta

The highest yielding Group 3, stiff straw and outstanding disease resistance with very high untreated yield, Invicta has a good hagberg falling number which infers a higher level of security than some of its competitors. Invicta has shown very good yield results as a first wheat and in late sown trials making it one of the most flexible varieties available.

Scout

Accepted by the biscuit milling industry and for export. Scout is the UK`s most widely grown soft group 3 variety with excellent grain quality. It is well suited for all soil types and rotations, both as a first or second wheat. It has outstanding disease resistance particularly against Yellow & Brown rust and Eyespot. Scout also has the benefit of resistance to OWBM.

Group 4 Wheat

Beluga

Highest yielding soft Group 4 variety on the HGCA RL. It has extremely short straw and superb resistance to lodging, both with and without PGR. Beluga has excellent resistance to yellow rust. Beluga is rated highly for the use in distilling and expected to find favour with the bio-ethanol industry.

Conqueror

Second highest yielding wheat on the UK recommended list, very consistent across years and soil types, midge resistant better yellow rust resistance than Oakley, ideal for drilling after roots.

A robust group 4 soft variety, can be sown early or in traditional drilling slots, Alchemy combines very stiff straw with good all round disease resistance, it is suitable for export, distilling, bio - fuels and feed.

Santiago

The highest yielding wheat on the recommended list, midge resistant, ideal partner for Oakley and Conqueror, very strong growth characteristics gives long grain fill period.

Viscount , Gp 4 premium soft wheat from KWS Big yields , short , stiff and OBM resistant - susceptible to YR so aggressive fungicidal programme required. Suitable as both a first and 2nd wheat

Oakley

A very high yielding Group 4 hard-milling feed variety, resistant to OWBM. Has performed very well in a wide range of situations , needs a robust fungicidal programme but will reward that input.

High yielding, hard milling alternative to Oakley, due to its good yellow rust resistance and excellent second wheat yields.

Duxford

Similar strengths to J B Diego, with high yield, good yellow rust resistance and strong second wheat performance.

Grafton

Higher yielding, slow developing wheat ideal for early sowing. Produces good quality, hard milling feed grain. Earliness similar to Cordiale and good second wheat performance mean it is a good OSR entry.

Zircon

A late autumn/spring sown white wheat grown on contract for the breakfast cereal market. Good premiums paid for a 74kg/hl feed spec, with a human consumption Don level.
