Wheat

Group 1- breadmaking varieties

Gallant

A new addition to the NABIM list in 2009, so yet to be proven on a large scale. Offering a significant yield improvement on Solstice, but like Solstice will need attention to its nitrogen programme to achieve the target protein.

Breeder: Syngenta (Malacca x Charger) x XI19

Hereward

Several millers have expressed renewed interest in this old favourite and it continues to be a mainstay of the Warburton contract. Openfield is now co-ordinating seed production on behalf of the breeders to the stabilise seed supply.

Breeder: RAGT (Norman `sib` x Disponent)

Solstice

The current mainstay of the British milling industry. Trial yields understate farm performance, but the variety needs a high input regime to give its best.

Breeder: Nickerson (Vivant x Rialto)

XI-19

Best used as a late sown or `alternative` wheat, and late nitrogen needs to be applied to boost grain protein. If earlier drilling is required, try Gallant.

Breeder: Nickerson (Cadenza x Rialto) x Cadenza

Group 2 breadmaking varieties

Cordiale

High yield, excellent grain quality and flexible drilling options. With the correct husbandry, it can be used in almost every situation: early or late drilled, first or second wheat. As a second wheat, Cordiale`s early maturity makes it an ideal entry for OSR.

Breeder: KWS -(Reaper x Cadenza) x Tambor

Einstein

Now declining but still a good consistent first wheat later sown or a dependable second. Millers tend to use Einstein as a lower protein gristing wheat rather than buying at 13%.

Breeder: Nickerson (Coded) x Haven x (Galahad x Moulin)

Panorama

Newly added as the highest yielding Group 2 and maybe the natural successor to Einstein from the same breeder. Less milling outlets than Cordiale.

Breeder: Nickerson Solstice x XI-19

KWS Sterling

A candidate variety from the breeder of Cordiale. Similar yields to Panorama, but yet to be evaluated by the millers.

Breeder: KWS Cordiale x (Quest x Wizard)

Group 3 soft milling

Claire

Established as a wheat suitable for early drilling, with good septoria resistance. Still a good choice where soft milling is required. Also a popular choice for late sowing.

Breeder: Nickerson - Wasp x Flame

Invicta

A high yields candidate variety from the breeder of Claire. Good foliar disease resistance.

Breeder:Nickerson

Scout

The first general purpose Group 3 for a number of years. Excellent grain quality and suitable for most situations. Highly disease resistant, with OWBM resistance.

Breeder: Senova - Z435 x Deben

Warrior

A candidate variety a year behind Scout with many of the same benefits.

Breeder: RAGT

Group 4 Wheat

Alchemy

A soft milling feed type with some potential for export and distilling. Robust disease profile but with a notable weakness for brown rust.

Breeder: Nickerson - Claire x (Consort x Woodstock)

J B Diego

High yielding, hard milling alternative to Oakley, due to its good yellow rust resistance and excellent second wheat yields.

Breeder: Senova - 3351B x Stru2374

Duxford

Similar strengths to J B Diego, with high yield, good yellow rust resistance and strong second wheat performance.

Breeder: Syngenta - Solstice x Scorpion 25

Grafton

Higher yielding, slow developing wheat ideal for early sowing. Produces good quality, hard milling feed grain. Earliness similar to Cordiale and good second wheat performance mean it is a good OSR entry.

Breeder: KWS - Cordiale x CPBT W97

Humber

High yielding good quality hard feed, ideal for heavier or more fertile sites where Oakley could be a lodging risk. Humber will probably decline with Grafton taking the acreage.

Breeder: KWS - Anglo x Krakatoa

Oakley

The out and out highest yield but with a specific weakness to yellow rust which will need Galmano seed treatment or rust- specific foliar sprays.

Breeder: KWS - (Aardvark `sib`) x Robigus) x Access

Viscount

Although it was disappointing that Viscount didn`t achieve Group 3 status, it is still a good versatile soft milling feed wheat with OWMB resistance. Potential export and industrial markets.

Breeder: KWS - Robigus x Canterbury

Speciality wheat varieties

Burnham

Burnham is a breadmaking wheat, grown on contract for Warburtons. For agronomy details and buy-back terms, contact your local Farm Business Manager.

Breeder: RAGT - (Excellent x Mallet) x Whistler

Zircon

A late autumn/spring sown white wheat grown on contract for the breakfast cereal market. Good premiums paid for a 74kg/hl feed spec, with a human consumption Don level.

Breeder: KWS - W62 x Ebony
